Birthplace of Park Chung-Hee, Mar 18, 2017 : Articles left by late South Korean President Park Chung-hee are displayed at his birthplace in Gumi, about 201 km (125 miles) southeast of Seoul, South Korea. Park Chung-hee is former military dictator who took power in a military coup in 1961 and ruled South Korea until his assassination in 1979. The late South Korean President was a lieutenant in the Japanese army during Japan's colonial rule over Korea and has been criticized widely when he imprisoned many pro-democracy activists during his 18-year-seizure of power for "modernisation" of the country. Park Chung-hee is father of Park Geun-hye who was South Korea's first democratically elected president to be ousted and has been named a criminal suspect for allegedly abusing her power and colluding with her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil in extorting money from local conglomerates.
