Sluice gate to begin operation of automatic closure system.
The automatic closure system will begin operating at the end of this month. The automatic closure system of seaside sluice gates and seawall gates will begin operation in Iwate Prefecture on March 31, in conjunction with the nationwide instantaneous warning system (J-Alert), which reports tsunami warnings and advisories. This is the first time such a system has been used in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Based on the lessons learned from the tsunami, in which many firefighters were killed in the process of closing the sluice gates, the system will be gradually introduced in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures as well.
