On September 18, 1967, the selection committee for the 3rd Tanizaki Junichiro Award (Chuo Koron-sha), including Yukio Mishima, met at Fukuda House in Toranomon, Tokyo. The selection committee meeting dragged on, and it was well into the night when it was decided that Kobo Abe's "Friend" and Kenzaburo Oe's "Football in the First Year of Man'en" would receive the prizes. The committee members were relieved to have fulfilled their major role and were relieved to be able to take a break.
