Flint hand-axe
Flint hand-axe. Close-up of a prehistoric Neanderthal axe made out of shaped flint, embedded in rock. This 85mm long stone-age tool is thought to have been made by Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis), and dates from the Middle Palaeolithic (Mousterian) era (around 300,000 to 30,000 years ago). It was found near Versigny, France. The triangular form, size and the material used, an orange-red carneol-flintstone, are all very characteristic for a number of Neanderthal axes found in this locality.
