Unesco adds Japanese Hidden Christian sites to World Heritage registry
A Christian's grave in cemetery, where simple crosses from Kakure Christian, but also catholic and buddhism are mixed together on July 23, 2017 in Ikitsui, Japan. Ikitsuki Island in Nagasaki is the most famous place where Hidden Christian (Kakure Kirishitian in Japanese) escaped repression by the shogun Tokugawa. In 2018 Unesco added 12 sites of Hidden Christians to the world heritage list because they "bear unique testimony to a cultural tradition nurtured by Hidden Christians in the Nagasaki region who secretly transmitted their faith during the period of prohibition from the 17th to the 19th century".
