Nagasaki and Amakusa Region Related to Submerged Christians" will be inscribed on the World Heritage List (July 2017 document photo)
A fishing boat passes close to Nakaeno island. Nakaeno island is a small island where Hidden Christian went to pick up holy water for a natural spring on May 3, 2017 in Ikitsui, Japan. Ikitsuki Island in Nagasaki is the most famous place where Hidden Christian (Kakure Kirishitian in Japanese) escaped repression by the shogun Tokugawa. In 2018 Unesco added 12 sites of Hidden Christians to the world heritage list because they "bear unique testimony to a cultural tradition nurtured by Hidden Christians in the Nagasaki region who secretly transmitted their faith during the period of prohibition from the 17th to the 19th century".
