The LDP held its 27th extraordinary party congress at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo and held a presidential election to choose a successor to President Eisaku Sato. In the runoff election, Kakuei Tanaka received 282 votes, defeating Takeo Fukuda, who received 190 votes, to become the new LDP president. Tanaka was nominated prime minister at the 69th extraordinary session of the Diet on April 6.
