Kakuei Tanaka

Kakuei Tanaka was elected as the sixth president of the Liberal Democratic Party at the LDP convention. While waiting for the results of the presidential election to be reported, Kakuei Tanaka writes a draft of his greeting, July 5, 1972. The LDP held its 27th extraordinary party congress at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo to elect a successor to President Eisaku Sato. In the runoff election, Kakuei Tanaka received 282 votes, defeating Takeo Fukuda, who received 190 votes, to become the new LDP president. Tanaka was nominated prime minister at the 69th extraordinary session of the National Diet on April 6.
