Close-up of cancer of the tongue
Tongue cancer. Close-up of a patient's mouth showing a malignant tumour on the surface edge of the outstretched tongue. Cancer of the tongue is the most serious type of mouth cancer because it spreads rapidly. As here, the edge of the tongue is most commonly affected. An ulcer with raised edges, or a white patch of thickened tissue (leucoplakia) may be the first sign. Usually it is painless until the cancer is advanced. It can spread to gums, the lower jaw, lymph nodes, floor of the mouth and the neck. Treatment may include radiotherapy, cancer drugs and surgery, although survival from advanced tongue cancer is low.
