South Korean independence fighter Yu Gwan-Sun, an alumnus of the high school, died while imprisoned for leading pro-independence rallies. Transferred to an underground cell in the prison, Yu marked the first anniversary of the movement before dying of her injuries on September 28, 1920, at age 17, according to local media. During and after the independence movement against Japan, some 7,509 Koreans were killed, 15,961 were injured and 46,948 were arrested and put in prison by the Japanese army, which had occupied the Korean peninsula from 1910-1945, according to the South Korean government.
