Organic vanilla production, Madagascar
Organic vanilla production. Worker hand-pollinating the flower of a Vanilla sp. plant at a vanilla farm. The seed pods of vanilla plants are commonly used as a food flavouring and in the perfume industry. Vanilla plants can only be pollinated naturally by a specific Melipona sp. bee found only in Mexico. Therefore, in order for the plants to produce their valuable seed pods outside of Mexico, they must be hand pollinated. Photographed in Madagascar.
