Conger eel
Conger eel (Conger conger) protruding from its rocky hideaway. The European conger is a nocturnal predator of fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. The upper jaw extends beyond the lower jaw and it has scaleless skin. The colouring depends on the type of seabed it inhabits. On rock its back is charcoal grey and its underside is pale. The conger can grow to over 100 kilograms in weight and 3 metres in length. It reaches sexual maturity at between five and 15 years of age. Although it reproduces only once, it spawns between three and eight million eggs. Photographed in the Mediterranean Sea.
