Kamaishi Line "SL Galaxy" Unveiled
JR East to be a catalyst for reconstruction
On April 2, a press test-ride of the steam locomotive "SL Ginga," which JR East will begin operating in Iwate Prefecture on April 12 to support reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake, was held between Kamaishi and Tono on the JR Kamaishi Line. The train features gaslight-style lighting and stained glass windows inspired by the world of the early Taisho and Showa periods, as well as a small planetarium, all based on the motif of "Night on the Galactic Railroad," a novel by Kenji Miyazawa, a locally well-known author.
